Aveda How-to: Weightless Volume 3 Ways

"The bigger the hair, the closer to God", "Bird nest", and "ratting". Remember those days? Well, they are back but not in the Ladybird Johnson or Tammy Wynette way. Getting a little lift to help maintain hair volume throughout the day has been around for a long time. I once collected fancy boxes that women would use to save their cut hair. Ewwwww!
The new way to get volume is with FABO products from Aveda called PureAbundance. The line has it all but a crimping iron helps.

Hare Raising Tale

Warner Brothers Studios had a classic rabbit that we all knew and loved as Bugs Bunny. Sharp tongue, sharp wit, and a wicked sense of humor had us laughing at some of the most ridiculous scenarios imaginable. One classic example is Bugs' run in with a hairy but sweet monster with one objective, to get ride of Bugs from the evil castle of the famous evil Dr.
In the exchange that became known as "The Hare Raising Tale", Bugs becomes a star crossed hairstylist with the gift for gab. The distraction sets the scene for what many find in the salon today. When a hairstylist distracts you with what THEY think is what YOU need it can become frustrating. It may be normal for the stylist but not funny to you so take control. Have the conversation with the stylist about what you want, let them decide the proper technique to achieve that look, and agree to that. Your hair will not be a hair raising tale but a rewarding and productive experience......laugh at jokes, bot your hair.

She Gives Me Fevers

Tomorrow is a big interview, a really important date, school pictures, or meeting the future in-laws for the first time and your hair is in need of a major overhaul and you have a fever...
We often forget the obviously common things to do when we are rushed or focused on other things. The Center for Disease Control has published the recent flu epidemic and the rate in which it is effecting everyone across the country.
Back to the 911 with your hair. So you notice a fever but you are not sure that you want to cancel the appointment you have to overhaul your hair. If I might offer a little advise: If you have a fever call and cancel the important date AND your hair appointment. Your hairstylist will thank you as will the staff of the salon.
When you are well enough to come in, they will make it worth the wait.....

Dry Cut Curls

Hair stylist that know curls and curly hair know that for some it's best to cut the hair dry. Curls, as mentioned in previous blogs, fall differently and can not be cut the same way straight hair is cut. Andre Walker, Oprah Winfrey's hairstylist wrote a book years ago and made a very interesting and poignant observation. Most stylists were cutting and styling hair for ways the clients NEVER wore their hair. Straight hair for women who had curly and and curly hair for women who had straight hair. He was the first stylist to say, "Hey! Your hair is curly, let's cut it to wear it that way". So, when a guest asks me to cut their hair the way they wear it I am more than happy to oblige.

Etiquette 101

This morning, as I enjoyed my "Love Migas" at Magnolia Cafe, I had the unfortunate experience of the dreaded "hair in my migas" outburst. Now, most would assume that the gorgeous waitress with the long cascading curls but it was actually the young woman sitting behind me. She was clearly smitten with the young man she was having coffee with because she continually flipped, twirled, and touched her hair.
Etiquette: When smitten with a boy (or girl) at a place where people eat, refrain from tossing hair or playing with it. You're gorgeous! He/She likes you! Speak with using words not loose hair.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

I'm not a medical Dr. nor do I claim to be but it's my opinion that when hair is gone, it's gone. Products have come and gone that make outrageous claims of hair restoration. Most of the products have been marketed to men, the helpless victim of the dreaded "I'm a man and I still have a pair" (Brad Paisley) disorder.
The marketing has changed to focus on the other victims of hair loss, women. Adding thickness and texture to hair will make the hair seem fuller, color often ads volume, and there are some treatments (Invati from Aveda) that actually helps hair loss from breakage. Breakage is one of the leading causes of the appearance of hair loss and thinning, not actual loss. It's worth trying.

We Can See Your Aura

As a man going through the normal aging process I have started to see the grey and have decided to do something about it. There are hundreds of thousands just like me trying to hide, cover, or eliminate the grey. The difference? I do this for a living and I have done it for 20+ years and most men have not.
The industry has several box brands that offer to help with this problem but often leaves an "aura" when users are in the sunlight. Grey blending, a technique that covers some grey and blends it naturally with the non-grey hair. It's easier and less messy than the box, nobody will ever see the "aura", and going grey will slow just a little.

In your own words

One of the most rewarding days at the salon you will ever have is when you share your expectations with your stylist. A professional will listen, repeat, and advise you so saying what you want in your own words will ensure that what you leave with is what you wanted.
Jargon: noun \ˈjär-gən, -ˌgän\
the technical terminology or characteristic idiom of a special activity or group
Sitting in a chair and talking about levels, angles, and remaining undertones will usually result in something you really didn't want.

New Year New Look

Happy New Year! What is the first thing on the list? Is it weight loss, gym, eating right, or spending more time on the budget? Well, with all of the hard things we always strive to achieve at the beginning of every new year wouldn't it be nice to do something that can make you feel better, look better, and just simply like more about yourself than a simple color or cut change. Does "That Girl" or Jennifer Aniston still greet you every morning in the mirror?
What have you always wanted to try? What time do you really have to spend in the morning? What color have you secretly wished your hair was? Take that information and let your stylist know. Most of us LOVE this opportunity and can help make the change easy and rewarding.
